Weather the (Spring) Storm

Residential Storm

Spring has arrived! While the change of season brings warmer temperatures and longer days, we can also expect unpredictable weather and sudden storms. While we can’t predict the weather, we can take steps to ensure our homes are ready for what Mother Nature throws at us.

Below are some tips to help prepare yourself and your home for spring storm season:

  • Inspect your Roof
    • Look for missing, cracked or loose shingles on your roof. Also check for shingles that are curling are lifting that could potentially allow water to seep in and have them replaced.
    • Consider upgrading to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. Class 4 shingles can reduce the risk of hail damage and lengthen the lifespan of your roof. Most insurance carriers will also provide a credit to your Homeowner’s policy if your roof classifies as Class 4, therefore lowering your premium.
    • Clear your gutters and downspouts of leaves, twigs, dirt, and debris to ensure heavy rainwater drains smoothly from your roof.

Ultimately, if you are unsure about your roof’s condition, schedule a professional inspection. If you do not have a trusted roofer, please reach out to our advisors and we are happy to provide you with recommendations.

  • Trim Trees & Secure Outdoor Items
    • Branches extending over your roof can break during a storm and lead to serious damage. Now is the time to cut back any limbs extending over your home and remove dead or fragile branches that could be carried away by strong winds.
    • Secure or bring in patio tables, chairs, mowers or any other loose items at the first signs of potential high winds.
  • Check your sump pump
    • If your home has a sump pump, ensure it’s working properly. Test it by pouring water into the pit to make sure it activates.
    • Install a Battery Powered Back Up for your sump pump in case of a power outage.
  • Create an emergency plan
    • Identify a safe place inside your home, away from windows and exterior walls.
    • Store flashlights, extra batteries, and first aid kits in a designated and easily accessible area.
    • Review the plan with family members ahead of time, so everyone knows where to go in case of an emergency.
