Identity Theft

A laptop containing the names, addresses, social security numbers, insurance information and health records of over 74,000 patients was stolen from the employee of a regional hospital. Although there was no evidence that the information had been accessed or misused, the hospital faced regulatory requirements in notifying patients of the breach. A subsequent class action lawsuit was filed by the patients. The cost to notify patients of the breach, monitor patients credit for two years, hire a public relations firm to monitor the situation and defend the lawsuit was over $6,300,000.
